Biography

Eric Pop joined the Electrical Engineering (EE) faculty at Stanford in July 2013. Previously he was with the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, first as an Assistant Professor (2007-12) and then as an Associate Professor with tenure (2012-13). His interests are in energy efficient electronics, with focus on carbon nanotubes, graphene, phase-change materials, and nanoscale energy transport. Between 2005-2007, he worked at Intel on non-volatile memory, and did post-doctoral work at Stanford. He received his Ph.D. in EE from Stanford (2005), M.Eng./B.S. in EE and B.S. in Physics from MIT (1999). In 2010 he was named a Presidential (PECASE) award winner by the White House, the highest honor given by the US government to Early-CAreer Scientists and Engineers. He is also a recipient of the ONR Young Investigator Award (2010), the NSF CAREER Award (2010), the AFOSR Young Investigator Award (2010), the DARPA Young Faculty Award (2008), the Arnold O. Beckman Research Award (2007), several best paper/poster and teaching/advising awards. He currently serves as the technical program vice-chair of the Device Research Conference (DRC). He is an IEEE Senior member and a member of MRS and APS.

Research Statement

The Pop lab studies energy efficient nanoelectronics, with focus on carbon nanotube and graphene devices, phase-change memory, and nanoscale energy transport. On a practical level, we seek to design devices which push the limits of energy dissipation per bit. On a fundamental level, we wish to understand and engineer energy transport, conversion, and recovery at the nanoscale, along with the properties of low-dimensional (1- or 2-D) devices and interfaces. Our experimental work spans electrical and thermal transport, transistors, interconnects, and material interfaces. Our simulations cover the multi-scale from atomistic to compact circuit models.
