Biography

Yoram Bresler received the B.Sc. (cum laude) and M.Sc. degrees from the Technion, Israel Institute of Technology, in 1974 and 1981 respectively, and the Ph.D degree from Stanford University, in 1986, all in Electrical Engineering. In 1987 he joined the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he is currently a Professor at the Departments of Electrical and Computer Engineering and of Bioengineering, and Research Professor at the Coordinated Science Laboratory. His current research interests include compressed sensing, multi-dimensional and statistical signal processing and their applications to inverse problems in imaging, and computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, in particular. Dr. Bresler was an Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions for Image Processing in 1992-93, on the editorial board of Machine Vision and Applications in 1991-2004,  a member of the IEEE Image and Multidimensional Signal Processing Technical Committee in 1994-1998, and served on the Awards Board of the IEEE Signal Processing Society. Currently he is on the IEEE Biomaging and Signal Processing Technical Committee, and on the editorial boards for the IEEE Journal on Selected Topics in Signal Processing, and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) Journal on Imaging Sciences. In 1988 and 1989 he received the Senior Paper Awards from the IEEE Signal Processing society, and a paper he coauthored with one of his students received the Young Author Award from the same society in 2002. He is the recipient of a 1991 NSF Presidential Young Investigator Award, the Technion (Israel Inst. of Technology) Fellowship in 1995, and the Xerox Senior Award for Faculty Research in 1998. He was named a University of Illinois Scholar in 1999, and appointed as an Associate at the Center for Advanced Study of the University in 2001-2. He is a Fellow of the IEEE and of the AIMBE.

Teaching Statement

My teaching focuses on signal processing at both the undergraduate and graduate level. I regularly teach ECE410/ECE310 -- introduction to DSP, ECE311 - Intro to DSP Lab, ECE420 -- DSP Lab, and ECE 513 -- Vector Space Signal Processing.

Research Statement

My current research addresses four main areas:

1) Fast algorithms for tomographic reconstruction. New algorithms are being developed for a variety of tomographic imaging geometries, in 2D and 3D, reducing the computational cost from O(N^3) or O(N^4) to O(N^2 log N) or O(N^3 log N), respectively. These algorithms provide more than an order of magnitude acceleration for practical image sizes, and will find applications in CT scanners used in medicine, security, and biomedical research. While fundamental research on these subject is being done at the University, applied research is conducted at the startup company, InstaRecon, which I founded and for which I serve as President and CTO.

2) Practical Compressive Sensing. This work addresses the development of theory and methods for sampling signals at less than the Nyquist rate, by using sparsity properties of their representation with respect to an appropriate basis, or in an appropriate space. Applications are being developed in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and in computed tomography (CT).

3)Statistical Learning for Sparse Signal Representation and Compressive Sensing. New methods of learning efficient signal representations from data are being developed and applied to compressive sensing. Learning the models from the sensed data itself provides substantial reduction in the amount of data needed for high-quality reconstruction. The application to Big Data is a recent area of emphasis in this work, which now addresses the development of scalable and on-line algorithms.

4) The development of computationally efficient algorithms with provable guaranteed performance for bi-linear inverse problems with sparsity constraints. These problems are more difficult than linear inverse problems, and much less is known about their theory. Yet, they arise in many engineering and scientific applications, including the classical problem of blind deconvolution.
