Biography

Before coming to the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, he was  working as an associate professor at the department of Computer Science and Engineering, Dhaka University, Bangladesh. He has a passion for improving lives by spreading the benefits of Information and Communication Technology at the grass roots level. With this vision, he has been actively involved with a number of projects which aim to improve Internet access, ICT literacy and promote use of the Internet for the benefit of people in Bangladesh. From July 2011 to June 2013, as the president of Internet Society Bangladesh Dhaka Chapter, he worked towards advancing the mission of the Internet Society. He believes that in many Asian countries like Bangladesh, proper education and use of an open and affordable Internet can not only remove a lot of obstacles but also has the possibility to change the lives of people by raising awareness, improving connectivity and facilitating freedom of expression. In order to improve the openness of Internet, he is collaborating on a project titled open Internet with the Internet Society Netherlands chapter. Besides this, he participated at the 7th Internet Governance Forum (IGF) where he contributed in different sessions which brought in a developing country's perspective into the discussions. Faisal is playing a very important role in Internet Governance capacity building in Bangladesh. Faisal also participated at the 82nd and 86th IETF meetings as an Internet Society fellow. He is committed to work towards increasing participation at the IETF from developing countries. Faisal has been well connected with a number of International groups. For example, he is an active member of Asia New Zealand Young Leaders Network, Asia Pacific Advanced Network (APAN) and Network Start up Resource Center (NSRC) and Asia Pacific Network Information Center (APNIC). He holds a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Otago, New Zealand.

At the university of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, he is involved with the Illinois Cyber Security Scholars Program (ICSSP) which is NSF funded project tailored to produce students with advanced skills in cyber-security related areas. He has also contributed significantly in preparing the network forensics course curium for the newly initiated 'digital forensics' course.

His research interest is in TCP congestion control, protocols for audio-video streaming, distributed social networks, Software Defined Networks, Cryptography and Network Security, Future Internet Research
