ECE Professor Michael C. Loui been named the new editor of the Journal of Engineering Education (JEE), the journal for the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE). He will take over the editorial duties of the journal this summer.

“I am excited by the opportunity serve as the editor of JEE, which is recognized globally as the premier journal for research on engineering education,” said Loui, who is a researcher in the Coordinated Science Lab. “Working with ASEE and the broader engineering education community, I would seek to connect this research with practice, for the ultimate benefit of students.”

Loui’s research interests include computational complexity theory, ethics in engineering and computing, and the scholarship of teaching and learning. He serves as executive editor of College Teaching, and as a member of the editorial board of Accountability in Research. He is a Carnegie Scholar and an IEEE Fellow. Loui was associate dean of the Graduate College from 1996 to 2000. He directed the theory of computing program at the National Science Foundation from 1990 to 1991. He received the Everitt Award for Teaching Excellence from the College of Engineering in 1984.

The Journal of Engineering Education reaches nearly 10,000 subscribers in 80 countries.

“I am pleased that Professor Loui has accepted the position of editor of the ASEE Journal of Engineering Education, and the College of Engineering supports him in his efforts,” said College of Engineering Dean Ilesanmi Adesida. “Engineering at Illinois was one of the ASEE founding organizations in 1893, and our College has provided significant leadership in the organization throughout its growth.”

The College of Engineering even served as a home to ASEE. In 1955, College of Engineering alumnus and distinguished faculty member W. Leighton Collins took the reins as ASEE’s secretary and executive director—a post he held for 14 years—and the University of Illinois serving as the organization’s campus headquarters. Collins has been credited with guiding ASEE to its current leadership role as a dominant force in engineering education, and the ASEE’s highest award for service to the field bears his name.

JEE reaches nearly 10,000 subscribers in 80 countries. It is published quarterly in partnership with a global community of engineering education societies and associations.

Founded in 1893, ASEE is a nonprofit organization committed to promoting excellence in engineering and engineering technology education, and advancing research, public service, and the practice of engineering worldwide.
