ECE announces recipients of its 2010 alumni awards

ECE ILLINOIS is proud to announce the recipients of the 2010 ECE Distinguished Alumni Award and the 2010 ECE Young Alumni Achievement Award.

ECE ILLINOIS is proud to announce the recipients of the 2010 ECE Distinguished Alumni Award and the 2010 ECE Young Alumni Achievement Award.

The ECE Distinguished Alumni Award honors ECE Illinois graduates who have made professional and technical contributions that bring distinction to themselves, the department, and the University. The award is presented each year at the Fall Alumni Awards Banquet.

  • Phillip Chan (MS ’75, PhD ’78) is Deputy President and Provost at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University in Hong Kong, China.
  • Major General David J. Eichhorn (BSEE ’76) is Commander of the Air Force Flight Test Center at Edwards Air Force Base in California.
  • John A. Orr (BSEE ’69, PhD ’77) is Provost at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, Massachusetts. 
  • Daniel H. Schaubert (BSEE ’69, MS ’70, PhD ’74) is Professor Emeritus in the Antennas and Propagation Lab at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, Massachusetts.
  • Jack Yuan-Chen Sun (MS ’79, PhD ’83) is Vice President of Research and Development at the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company in Hsinchu, Taiwan.
  • Andrew Yang (MS ’86, PhD ’89) is Chairman and CEO at Apache Design Solutions, Inc. in San Jose, California.

Established in 1999, the ECE Young Alumni Achievement Award recognizes young alumni (less than 40 years old as of April 1 in the year of the award) who have made outstanding professional contributions to their field since graduating from ECE Illinois. One or two Young Alumni Achievement Awards are presented each year at the Fall Alumni Awards Banquet.

  • Joseph Barich (BSEE ’94, MS ’96) is a patent attorney at McAndrews, Held, & Mallory, Ltd. In Chicago, IL.
  • Voon-Yew (Aaron) Thean (BSEE ’96, MS ’97, PhD ’01) is the Engineering Manager of Process Technologies at Qualcomm, Inc. in San Diego, California.

The recipients will be honored at a banquet on September 17, where they will receive plaques commemorating their distinctions.
