Minors for Engineering Students and How to Declare One

Introduction

Engineers can enroll in and be recognized for completion of any of more than 40 different minors offered by any college of the University.

What is a Minor?

  1. A coherent program requiring some depth in the subject, but not as extensive as a major.
  2. Most are comprehensive rather than narrowly focused.
  3. Usually: 16-21 hours, counting all prerequisites inside (but not outside) the minor department.
  4. At least 6 hours at 400 level or designated 300 level advanced courses (and must be distinct from credit earned for the student's major or another minor).
  5. Completion of a minor will be noted on the student's printed transcript. Failure to complete a declared minor carries no penalty (e.g. the transcript does not refer to the minor at all).

Guidelines

  1. Minors are optional -- students do not need one to graduate (even in other colleges).
  2. Sponsoring department is responsible for information and advising.
  3. Students cannot extend their undergraduate years just to complete a minor.
  4. No priority registration is given to students in the minor.
  5. No retroactive minors may be added after graduation.

How to Enroll

  1. Complete form, available from the College of Engineering (206 Engineering Hall), and return it there.
  2. Cannot enroll before finishing 30 hours
  3. Cannot enroll after first day of a student's last term before graduation.
  4. Course substitutions must be approved by sponsoring department and submitted to the student's college.

Students are encouraged to consult the minor advisors and materials available via the Web. Some descriptions may incorrectly describe limitations on who can take the minor -- consult the sponsoring department if you have questions.

Note - Computer Engineering students may not minor in Computer Science but Electrical Engineering students may.
